Dr. B. S. Srinath is one of India’s most respected surgical oncologists, whose career spanning more than five decades is defined by clinical precision, academic brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to patient care.
A gold medallist and best outgoing graduate of the University of Mysore, Dr. Srinath went on to complete his MS in Surgery at PGIMER, Chandigarh, where he received the Pfizer Gold Medal (1976). His pursuit of excellence took him to the United Kingdom, where he trained in oncology and was awarded the rare distinction of dual Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow and Edinburgh). During this period, his groundbreaking research on colonic cancer nutrition earned him the prestigious UK Government ORS Award (1981).
On returning to India, Dr. Srinath brought his expertise to premier institutions such as Tata Memorial Hospital, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, and MS Ramaiah Medical College, before establishing himself as a leading surgical oncologist at the Bangalore Institute of Oncology. Over the years, he has personally treated more than five lakh patients and performed over 60,000 complex surgeries, including Karnataka’s first Whipple’s pancreatic surgery in 1984. Renowned for his meticulous technique, he set benchmarks in surgical outcomes and infection control, consistently maintaining hospital-acquired infection rates below 1%.
Beyond the operating theatre, Dr. Srinath has been a passionate academician. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and guided the training of over 100 postgraduate oncologists, many of whom now lead cancer programs across India. His collaborative research ties span globally reputed institutions, including the Mayo Clinic, University of Nottingham, Institute of Cancer Research (London), Maastricht University, IISc, and JNCASR.
Today, Dr. Srinath continues to balance his active surgical practice with mentorship and research, embodying the rare blend of a master surgeon, academic leader, and compassionate healer whose work has shaped the landscape of oncology in India.
